RigWheels, known for their DIY dolly systems and rigging setups, have released a line of brushless gimbal vehicle mounts called the RigMount XL.
As you can see from the image above, the mount provides a wide stance, in this case, with the DJI Ronin, ideal for distributing the weight of the camera and gimbal over a wide reach. This even works with larger camera rigs without a gimbal. The mount works by magnetically attaching itself to a surface or via the suction cups. The gimbal can be attached to the mount by an adapter plate ( A gimbal mounting adapter plate is not included with this configuration. However, Rigwheels plans to release one for the Ronin M in early September.)
The camera weight and raised centre of gravity of the gimbal, will require some serious tensile strength, provided by the RigMounts’ magnets 400 pounds of pulling force, and with additional magnets, up to 1000 pounds, great for heavy rigs like an Arri outfitted with an Optimo.
The RigMount XL Magnetic is the mainstay of the product with 8 magnets which help to adapt to curves in the body panels of a car. They can be screwed in/out of the the arms. Magnets can be added or removed to provide the strength necessary for your application. You can use up to 20 magnets with the mounting holes in the Rig Plate and Arms (up to 1000lb of pulling force, as mentioned before).
There is also the suction cups version, which is at a lower price point the magnetic one, or can be complemented with the magnetic version for better holding powqer.
There are also vacuum suction cups with a visual indicator, for those who need reassurance about the rig being secure (or not)
They even have a add-on riser kit to add 8? of height to any of the RigMount XL configurations, without any more bulky/fragile/clunky constructs.
Finally, they also introduce the hostess tray or the sidecar, which can get you great side shots, very reminiscent of those high-octane car chase sequences. Also, because the sides of vehicles generally have a lot of curves and contours our A-Cup suction cups are recommended for this setup because they can conform the the curves.
All versions are available for shipping, sans the Ronin M adapter, which comes out in September. Here’s a quick look at the price list:
