Tamron launched the 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC lens for APS-C sensors. The lens is a direct upgrade of its predecessor, the AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO, which was launched some 10 years ago and was at the time as a cheaper alternative to other market-dominating lenses of Canon and Nikon.
Tamron claims this new version is the lightest in its class. It comes with a host of improvements. It is an all-rounder with its zoom range of 18-200 and a minimum focus distance of 19.6″. The biggest upgrade to this second generation lens is the addition of Vibration Compensation creating optimal image stabilisation, producing non-blurred images even at high shutter speeds or fast camera movements. Second is an updated autofocus DC motor for quicker and quieter focusing.
The lens is made up of 16 elements in 14 groups, has seven aperture blades, and uses a Low Dispersion (LD) to cut down on chromatic aberrations, ghosting and lens flares.
Additionally, the lens also sports a rubber zoom and focus ring for better ergonomics. The lock switch on the side of the lens ensures safety of your lens and camera. The mostly-plastic build of the lens makes it feel a bit rickety and fragile, but also makes it lightweight at 400g. Finally, the lens is moisture resistant, protecting it from damage on a rainy day (don’t hold us to it!).
The lens will be available for Canon and Nikon mounts first and then for Sony Alpha, albeit without VC, as Sony Alpha sensors feature sensor-based image stabilization. It starts shipping on 20th August and will retail for around $263 (approximately).
