4 Must Have Accessories for the Sony FX6

These accessories will make your life easier with the Sony FX6.

Sony just released its most compact and handy cinema camera till date, the new Sony FX6 (AmazonB&H).

While the camera’s body is super light and compact, I am sure you are aware that you will need to attach some accessories to it so that it can actually be professionally usable.

Sony already has been gracious enough with giving us a cold shoe kit, grip remote control, handle, LCD hood, LCD monitor all with the camera itself.

In this article we will try to list the top four must-have accessories you might need for the Sony FX6.

1 Atomos Shogun 7

The Atomos Shogun 7 (AmazonB&H) is a highly recommended monitor and external recorder.

Why would you need an external recorder? Because this is the only way for you to be able to record in 16-bit Prores RAW 4K easily since FX6 can only output it through an SDI port.

2 Sony CFexpress Type A cards and Reader

Sadly Sony doesn’t provide a free card, and Type A cards are still a rarity so you’ll be needing Sony Tough CFexpress Type cards (Amazon, B&H) for reliable 4K recording.

I recommend getting the 160 GB card, and you’ll need at least two of them. You’ll also need a CFexpress Type A card reader (Amazon, B&H):

The total costs for a couple of cards and reader can hit $1,000 in some countries, but it’s an expense you can’t live without if you really want to take advantage of all the features of the Sony FX6 (AmazonB&H).

 3 Zacuto Kameleon EVF Pro

Since Sony has not given us an EVF with the FX6, the Zacuto Kameleon Pro EVF Pro (B&HAmazon) can be a solid addition to your kit.

An EVF becomes very important if you decide to set up a shoulder rig, or would like to operate the camera cinema-style.

The Kameleon Pro is slightly expensive, but is light, has both HDMI and SDI ports, and has all the features you could possibly need. The only downside, if you want to call it that, is you need external power via the LEMO connector. Unfortunately, this is true of most EVFs. It isn’t a deal breaker, though.

If it is, you always have the option of the Zacuto Gratical HD Micro OLED EVF, which is heavier and larger.

The Zacuto Kameleon Pro EVF Pro (B&HAmazon) supports up to DCI 4K input via HDMI and up to 1080p60 via SDI.

It also features 3D LUT support, joystick control, anti-fog technology, frame guides and four user-assignable buttons.

The Z CAM EVF101 is also an option if you’re willing to wait and want something cheaper. However, I’m not sure how reliable it is.

 4 Hoodman HD350 Hood

In real-world run and gun situations, you could work around an expensive EVF with a good hood.

And Hoodman hoods has been around for ages. The Hoodman HD350 (Amazon, B&H) is ideal for the FX6 and will also be compatible with most 3.5″ LCD screens. At this price it’s a no brainer.

I hope you found my list of accessories for the Sony FX6 (AmazonB&H) useful. If you know of any others please let me know in the comments below.
