In this quick video I’ll go over a cheap thumb grip I bought, and some thoughts:

Advantages:

Supposedly gives you a better grip, a place to rest your thumb.

Disadvantages:

  • Not really necessary with the a7R II, a7S II and a7S, because the camera already has a natural resting groove for the thumb.
  • Cheap-feeling and wobbly, not really secure. I’m not sure how strong the hot shoe mount is in the long run.
  • Very few good options in the market, possibly due to point number one.

Overall, I don’t recommend you purchase a thumb grip unless your thumb desperately needs one.
