For trouble shooting, follow these steps:
- Check your cable. You might want to buy a “High Speed” or HDMI 2.0 labelled cable. I’m using one from AmazonBasics and it works fine. You don’t need to buy the really expensive stuff. If you want, you can buy the official Nikon cable, which is HC-E1 (Amazon, B&H)
- Check the format you’re recording in. E.g., if you’re shooting 10-bit, it is not possible to record 1080p100 or 1080p120.
- Make sure the format matches the output resolution. If you’re recording 1080p the output resolution should also be 1080p. Try the AUTO setting as well.
- Make sure your external recorder has been updated to the latest firmware and that it supports the signal you’re trying to output. E.g., my Atomos Shogun only accepts 4K 30 fps at best. In the future, it will not support RAW so I need to buy a new recorder.
- Try switching the camera/recorder on or off one by one. Sometimes it’s just a case of the signal getting jammed.
- Turn Advanced Rec Control to Off.
- Reset your camera settings and try again. If you have saved it to an XQD card you can get back your settings by Loading it again.
Additional notes:
- D-lighting and NR is off when you’re exporting N-Log
- Viewfinder does not work in N-Log
- The Autofocus is worse in N-Log because it is a flat profile. AF needs more contrast.
- Angle of view in 10-bit is reduced to 90% (Crop factor of 1.1)
