Welcome to the Sony a7R II guide! This guide has been designed so you can follow along with me every step of the way. The goal is to get you shooting with confidence as fast as possible, whether it be stills or video.
First we’ll go over the common settings, and then branch out into either stills or video. Each subsequent lesson will go deeper. You can decide how far you want to go!
This is the very first lesson, a quick start guide that goes into:
- What’s in the box.
- Some important accessories and components to get started.
- Some important decisions you need to make.
- A brief explanation of all the buttons and dials of the camera.
- How to shoot stills and videos.
- How to playback what you’ve shot, and how to delete them.
- How to format your card.
- How to set the display on the LCD (Monitor) and EVF (Viewfinder).
- In-camera level.
- Is the camera weather-sealed?

If all this sounds intimidating, don’t worry. We’ll go over each setting one by one and you only have to set it once. Just follow along in the next lesson.
I’ve used version 1.0 of the firmware for this guide. Ver 2.0 did add one menu item and everything else has been pushed down one notch. But it doesn’t change anything.
FAQs
Q. Are all cameras PAL/NTSC switchable?
A. No. Cameras sold in the US probably are not PAL/NTSC switchable. You either have PAL/NTSC or just NTSC (blank in the menu).
