Updates to the Panasonic GH5 Guide

Updates

This page contains all the updates, corrections, additions and changes to the Panasonic GH5 from its inception. It’s sorted date-wise, with the latest being on top. This way you can check back to see what has changed.

October 6th 2020

I’ve finally sold my Panasonic GH5. I really didn’t want to, because it’s still an amazing camera.

I’ve not been using it for ages, and being a digital item it’s better in someone else’s hands being used.

I expect Panasonic to release a GH6. But, I’m pretty convinced it’s the end of the road for Micro Four Thirds. In any case, my interest in it is gone, and I’m fully committed to Super 35 and full frame cameras.

I’ll try to support you as best as I can, though.

Happy 2020!

Many cameras have come and gone since the last update, but the Panasonic GH5 is still one of my favorite tools for filmmaking. Something about the image quality and usability just makes it a dependable beast.

And Panasonic hasn’t been quiet. They have released a new firmware update, v2.6. Just bug fixes for video work, but after all this while it might be a good idea to update the firmware.

Here’s the link to the firmware page.

Here’s a new cage option for the GH5, and every other camera: The Best Universal Cage for Mirrorless and DSLR Cameras

January 27th 2018

Will I be making a guide for the new GH5s?

Not likely. The simple reason is I’m not purchasing it so it wouldn’t make sense to buy it just to make a guide.

Would I have purchased the GH5s instead of the GH5? [Or, which is better?]

They are different cameras for different scenarios. Here’s what’s unique about each the other doesn’t have:

  • GH5S – Low Light ability
  • GH5 – Image Stabilization, 5K 4:3/Anamorphic mode, higher resolution still photographs

What is your priority? I really don’t care much for low light ability as it is overrated. I own the a7S and a7S II and have made guides for those as well, so I should know. I can count on my fingers the number of times I’ve need to go over ISO 12,000 in the last three years.

Internal IS is important if you handhold the camera a lot. In the fashion videos I made, I used manual lenses and IBIS was a lifesaver. It also improves upon the quality of the OIS in some of the lenses. It is more important to me than low light ability.

I also love the 4:3 mode because it gives you the widest sensor size and option for anamorphic, albeit only in a lower bit rate. Speaking of anamorphic, there has been virtually zero demand for the anamorphic lesson so I’m dropping it. If there’s future demand I’ll revisit it. As of now, the guide is done!

November 11th 2017

Added the completed video documentary to PROJECT CASE STUDY: How I Exposed Cinelike D.

I hope you like it!

New video: Panasonic GH5 v2.1 Review.

I’ve updated these lessons in keeping with the new findings:

What next? The last major lesson to this guide is the 5K anamorphic workflow video. I’ll be publishing it sometime in November. Let me know if you have any questions or topics to cover.

New video: How to update to firmware version 2.0.

Broadcast India is happening this week so I’m pretty tied up till then. I will be testing the new features right after that and should have a video out as soon as possible.

September 28th 2017

The new firmware v2.0 is out. This completes the firmware roadmap. Check out the important new features in this post.

I will be covering these updates in a new video soon. It should be out by the end of October. Unfortunately, the 400 Mbps update requires a V60 class card, which isn’t available except by one manufacturer, with no reviews. Panasonic has a V90 class card coming, but its too expensive to recommend.

Stay tuned.

New lesson: What is a focal reducer and which is better, the Metabones Speedbooster or the Aputure LensRegain?

When the new firmware (400 Mbps, “6K” anamorphic 4:3) arrives, I’ll be sure to test it and put up a report. Stay tuned!

August 26th 2017

This one took a while because I wanted to find a decent colorist who will also walk us through his process. And I found the best colorist in India, who graded both the Baahubali movies – the highest grosser ever.

Added Case Study: How I graded V-Log. Masterclass by India’s best colorist. Enjoy!

Next up is the Aputure LensRegain (Speedbooster) video. I’ll probably get down to it in about 10-14 days.

June 17th 2017

Added Case Study: How I exposed V-Log. Enjoy!

June 14th 2017

Added Case Study: How I exposed Cinelike D. Enjoy!

Next up I have the Case Study on how I exposed V-Log (by the 22nd of this month), and after that the Aputure LensRegain review.

June 12th 2017

Added a new video to the lesson: What Shutter Speeds to use for Video.

The typical rule of thumb is to have your shutter speed 1/twice the frame rate. In this new video I share with you how I used shutter speeds from 1/30s all the way to 1/2000s for “The Character”. When can you break the rules, and how?

June 11th 2017

Added completed video (titled ‘The Character’) shot in Portrait Style. Also download the original master in UHD: Case Study: How I exposed Portrait Mode.  I’ve also published my final render settings in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Please let me know what you think!

Next up:

  • PROJECT CASE STUDY: How I Exposed Cinelike D (I hope to get it done by the 14th), final video will take another week.
  • Aputure LensRegain (Speedbooster) review

June 10th 2017

Added new lesson: Low Budget Handheld Gimbals for the Panasonic GH5

Aputure has sent me a LensRegain for review. I should have a lesson up in the next week or so. If you have any questions about it please let me know.

June 9th 2017

Added Case Study: How I exposed Portrait Mode. Enjoy!

June 8th 2017

The Case Study is taking more time than I thought. I’m editing the final video at the same time so you can see what Im talking about. It should be out later today or tomorrow.

It will be worth the wait!

June 6th 2017

Added two new lessons:

  1. Ex. Tele Conv. Mode: Is it Worth it?
  2. Comparison of Photo Styles

Coming later today or tomorrow: PROJECT CASE STUDY: How I Exposed Portrait Style

June 5th 2017

Welcome to the Panasonic GH5 Guide! I’ll be adding a few lessons and BTS in the coming weeks, in this order:

Tomorrow, 6th July

  • PROJECT CASE STUDY: How I Exposed Portrait Style
  • Tele Conv. Mode: Is it Worth it?

8th July

  • PROJECT CASE STUDY: How I Exposed Cinelike D

12th July

  • PROJECT CASE STUDY: How I exposed V-Log

Later

  • PROJECT CASE STUDY: How I color graded V-Log – I need to first edit and complete the project (which includes additional shooting). Only then can I do the final grade. This might extend to July.

If you want to see lessons not mentioned in the main menu, let me know. If there are enough requests, I’ll do it.
