3 Must have Accessories for the Canon EOS C70

Here are 3 must-have video accessories for the Canon EOS C70 that will make your life easier.

Here are 3 must-have accessories for the Canon EOS C70 (AmazonB&H) to make your life easier.

1 Zacuto Kameleon EVF Pro

Since Canon has decided to do away with the EVF and yet design the camera like it has one, the Zacuto Kameleon Pro EVF Pro (B&H, Amazon) can be a solid addition to your kit.

An EVF becomes very important if you decide to set up a shoulder rig, or would like to operate the camera cinema-style.

The Kameleon Pro is slightly expensive, but is light, has both HDMI and SDI ports, and has all the features you could possibly need. The only downside, if you want to call it that, is you need external power via the LEMO connector. Unfortunately, this is true of most EVFs. It isn’t a deal breaker, though.

If it is, you always have the option of the Zacuto Gratical HD Micro OLED EVF, which is heavier and larger.

The Zacuto Kameleon Pro EVF Pro (B&H, Amazon) supports up to DCI 4K input via HDMI and up to 1080p60 via SDI.

It also features 3D LUT support, joystick control, anti-fog technology, frame guides and four user-assignable buttons.

The Z CAM EVF101 is also an option if you’re willing to wait and want something cheaper. However, I’m not sure how reliable it is.

2 The Canon EF-EOS R 0.71x Mount Adapter

The Canon EOS C70 (AmazonB&H) has an RF mount. You have many options to adapt EF lenses, of which the newest entry is the Canon Mount Adapter EF–EOS R 0.71x adapter (Amazon, B&H).

This is a focal reducer designed specifically by Canon. It’s more expensive than third-party focal reducers but Canon’s custom optical design and electronic contact support is itself worth the price of entry.

The 1.5x crop factor of the Canon C70 drops down to 1.03x. In other words, a 35mm field of view on a full frame camera will give you the same field of view on the C70 with this adapter.

You also get a full stop of extra light with this adapter. In simple terms, that EF 24-105mm f/4 L becomes a 24-105mm f/2.8 lens.

The Canon Mount Adapter EF–EOS R 0.71x adapter (Amazon, B&H). comes with its own set of screws and has a special placement on Canon EOS C70. I think it’s a must-have accessory for the Canon EOS C70 to open up a wide array of lens options.

3 Blackmagic design Mini XLR to XLR Adapter

Since the Canon EOS C70 (AmazonB&H) boasts two mini XLR audio inputs instead of the standard full size 3-pin XLR inputs, you’ll need an adapter like this one:

It’s a Blackmagic Design set of 2 Mini XLR to XLR Audio Cables (Amazon, B&H). There are other brands, but none from serious pro audio companies, save Blackmagic Design.

I’ve used and tested them with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, so I know they work. However, I’m not a fan of these extra adapters. They just add one more point of failure (or audio hell).

But if you’re a one-person team, you have no choice.

I hope you found this list useful. If you’re aware of other must-have accessories for the Canon EOS C70 (AmazonB&H) please let us know in the comments below.

  1. Powering the Kameleon EVF Pro is a hassle. And no loopthrough on input means you can’t use any other device such as a streaming box. Hard pass. There are better (more affordable) options. I wish Canon let you use the DVF-DC2 in the hotshoe. That would probably do it for me in those cases where it is too bright to use LCD. I’ll probably end up going the loupe route since it is much less hassley.

  2. A simple LCD loupe is a much better option than any EVF, it’s even better because you get a much bigger image, it’s much lighter and you don’t need any additional power. Also it’s cheaper, you can buy a Kinotehnik LCDVF for $100.

  3. Is there any way to externally trigger start/stop or adjust aperture yet besides the RF-v100? Rumors? I’m wanting to put this on a shoulder rig but not having an external grip like the c100 or c200 has makes that impractical. Thanks.

    • It isn’t mentioned anywhere on the Canon USA website. However, if you do find out a way or a hack, please do let us know. It will be an interesting bit of info to have. The new Sony FX6 has a content browser compatibility mode, which means you can control the camera with your phone or tablet.
