A great exercise for directors is to breakdown a script from a famous movie, and then compare their work to the finished film to see what choices the director made and why.
In this video I breakdown the first sequence of Bridge of Spies, from the published shooting script (PDF – It might have been written after the movie was edited). I write down the shot division and storyboard the entire sequence and then compare it to the original. I watched the movie for the first time only after completing the exercise.
